Interview with Holly Chessman

I was able to do an interview with the wonderful Holly Chessman, author of AMPLIFY. If you have not heard of this book please go check out my review post right before this one. Here are the questions and answers from Holly.
1. What inspired you to write a book about building growing your voice and career?

I love where I am in my career. I’m a Vice President of Marketing for a large company and I’ve built a strong reputation both online and off. What I don’t like is that I don’t see many other women there to share the glory. I decided that if I want to see a change, I’ve got to get off my butt and make it happen!

My goal is to help people - women in particular - set the goals that make sense in their lives and take the right steps to achieve them. Those goals don’t have to involve becoming leaders or spending a million hours at work. They can include having a job that lets you spend time with your family or learning new skills that interest you. The important thing is figuring out what needs to be done to make those goals a reality.

2. There are other books about how women can grow their careers. What makes yours different?

One unique aspect of AMPLIFY is the fact that at the end of every chapter, there are step-by-step instructions on how to implement the lessons in your own life. After, I provide scenarios for how the guidelines can work in reality.

One other thing that makes this book unique: I truly want readers to write to me and tell me about their achievements. I even provide my contact information – and I’ll reply if you reach out to me! I don’t want the book to sit on anyone’s shelf and collect dust. I want you to really try out the steps and tell me about your challenges and successes. The only way we’ll all succeed is if we support each other!

3. What is your writing schedule?

I don’t write every day, because I also hold down a full-time job and have four kids, a husband, and a dog. That all keeps me very busy during the week!

I do most of my writing on the weekends. It was really difficult when my children were very young. Now that the youngest is six years old, however, the kids are all great about entertaining themselves and watching out for one another while I write.

4. When you’re not writing, what do you like to do for fun?

I love, love, LOVE Doctor Who! I’ve watched it since I was a kid. I have always wished for my own TARDIS. It would be so much fun to be able to travel through space and time! Tom Baker is my favorite Doctor because I love the twinkle in his eye. But I have to admit that I’m thrilled that there is now a woman Doctor – the first since the show started in 1963!

5. What is your next project?

Right now I’m working a set of online courses to go with AMPLIFY. I really enjoy teaching people in-person but I know that’s not feasible for every reader. I’m planning to offer courses that correspond with the tips in the book. I’m going to combine them with a weekly screen sharing session so people taking the classes can ask questions, help one another, and cheer each other on.
